Mangrove forests were once generally dismissed as swampy wastelands. Planners, scientists, and coastal dwellers have now come to value them as remarkably diverse and important ecosystems.

Mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs work as a single system that keeps coastal zones healthy. Mangroves provide essential habitat for thousands of species. They also stabilize shorelines, preventing erosion and protecting the land -and people- from waves and storms.

“The bride and her entourage walk sadly during the Nyongkolan, as a way to show they are heartbroken that one of their beloved ones will leave their village.”

Traditional Sasak Wedding Experience

Dress up for a real local wedding in Lombok and become part of a Sasak tradition. Including traditional wedding costumes and coffee / tea.

1. Midang
The Midang Process is the night that the potential groom visits the bride’s home to have a heart to heart conversation about their relationship. It is there that the two will discuss the marriage and their future together in private.

2. Merarik (Usually agreed upon during Midang)
The bride will then meet the groom at an agreed upon location where she will be “kidnapped” and taken back to his home. It is here she will stay for the next three days, supervised under the watchful eyes of the groom’s family. The two are forbidden to be intimate during this time and are expected to sleep in separate beds.

3. Nyelabar
After 24 hours, one of the family members from the groom’s side will visit the bride’s family and inform them of the decision of marriage. Rejecting the offer is thought of as shameful and is therefore not usually an option for the family. Once all issues have been resolved in civil conversation, the two families will begin discussing ceremonial plans and finances.

4. Ngawinang
This is the actual wedding ceremony and it’s held in a religious establishment. The ceremony unites the two in the eyes of God and blesses their future together. During Ngawinang there is also a moment where the families appreciate their neighbours and villages, as well as giving thanks for the succes of the ceremony. This moment of appreciation is called “Begawe”.

5. Nyongkolan
The groom’s entourage will visit the bride’s house. It looks like a parade where many people walk in line. The parade is accompanied by the Gendang Beleq (Traditional music and dance perfomance). This last step of the wedding will usually be held until the end of the day, after sunset. It is a symbol of respect of the groom to the bride’s family.

Experience the festivities of Nyongkolan for yourself during the tour.

Price per Person: IDR 350K
